A litter at home is a lot of happiness, and the time comes to think about the departure of the little ones. Before they join their new family, the law asks for some papers, whether they are sold or given. They are not quite the same for a puppy, kitten, ferret or rabbit. Here is what to prepare, species by species, and when.
Who has the right to sell, who can only give?
For dogs and cats, selling small ones means carrying out a breeding activity: you have to be declared, with a SIREN number. Only one exception: Lelélieur who only doesOne litter per year, registered with the LOF (dogs) or at the loof (cats), with its litter number, and declared on the national basis.
If the scope is not registered and you are not a declared breeder, you can give the little ones. This is often the case with a litter that was not planned.
This exception is for dogs and cats only. For a range of ferrets or rabbits, if you plan to sell it, ask the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of Populations (DDPP) in your department.
At what age can the little ones leave?
- Puppies and kittens : not before eight weeks, whether sold or given. It’s the law.
- ferrets : the official instruction of the Ministry of Agriculture indicates two months.
- rabbits : No age is set by law, but the official certificate model advises not to accommodate a rabbit before eight weeks.
In any case, leave the little one a little longer with his mother and his siblings to grow well.
What papers to prepare before departure?
IDENTIFICATION
Before any departure, even free, the puppy, the kitten and the ferret must be identified by electronic chip or tattoo, and recorded in the national I-CAD file. For the rabbit, identification is recommended, without being mandatory.
The veterinary certificate
For dogs and cats, a veterinarian draws up a certificate after examining the animal, less than three months before departure. it is requested Even in case of donation. The law does not require it for ferrets and rabbits.
The certificate of commitment and knowledge
This is the rule common to the four species, and the one that surprises the most. Any person who hosts an animal, purchase or donation, must have signed a certificate of commitment and knowledge For this species. It is issued by a person authorized for the species, and the animal can only leave At least seven days After its deliverance: it is a time for reflection wanted by the law.
If the family has already signed a For the same species and presents it to you, it remains valid: it has no end date. In the event of a sale, you then give him a briefing on the animal and its needs. For a donation, this document is not imposed, but it is the best way to convey what you know about the little one.
The simplest: ask the family as soon as she is chosen, to anticipate these seven days.
Assignment certificate
It accompanies all sales. For a donation between individuals, apart from a breeding, it is not imposed, but it keeps a useful trace for both parties.
birth certificate or pedigree
If the puppy or kitten is registered with the LOF or LOOF, it leaves with its birth certificate or pedigree.

The departure schedule
Not all papers are prepared the day before. In order:
- As soon as the family is chosen : Check if she has already signed a Certificate of Commitment for the species. Otherwise, she has it delivered as soon as possible.
- in the three months preceding the departure : the visit to the veterinarian, for the veterinary certificate (puppy, kitten) and identification if not yet done.
- At least seven days before departure : The commitment certificate must have been issued.
- The day of departure : you hand over the papers, and the assignment certificate in the event of sale.
- After departure, without waiting : You declare the change of holder on I-CAD (dog, cat, ferret; rabbit if identified).
Why all these papers?
An animal is not a commodity: that it leaves identified, in good health, towards a family that knows what it is committed to, this is the minimum owed to it. These documents are not only formalities: they exist to limit compulsive purchases and abandonments. This is the subject of the law of November 30, 2021 against animal abuse.
Patteskit: your transfer file, ready in a few minutes
Patteskit was created in Normandy by Céline Lechevallier, for a simple reason: these papers are difficult, even for perfectly honest occasional breeders, and more for a family who discovers everything at the same time.
The principle: you fill out an online form on your puppy, kitten, ferret or young rabbit, and you receive by email, in your name:
- the briefing On the animal and its needs, with its photo;
- the Commitment certificate Of its kind, delivered under your name if you have laced for the species, if not ready to be delivered, with a page which explains to the family how to do;
- lCertificate of disposal pre-filled;
- a roadmap Who tells you what to do, and when.
The real gain is time. More evenings to look for the right model, to check what the law says or to copy the same information on Word. You fill out the form once. For the next little one of the same scope, your information is already recorded: only that of the new animal remains.
Patteskit prepares what writes, and tells you when to do the rest. The first file is offered, without bank card; Then €9 per animal, without subscription. The site, in free access, answers the most frequent questions, sources in support: legs-kit.fr.
